Tampa Bay's inshore waters are a playground for light tackle enthusiasts. We'll mix it up throughout the day, using techniques like sight casting to tailing redfish on the flats, working topwater lures for explosive snook strikes near mangrove edges, or drifting live bait over deep grass beds for hefty trout. Our captains are always happy to show you the ropes if you're new to these methods.
Depending on the tides and conditions, we might hit up spots like the Weedon Island flats, the Gandy Bridge pilings, or the grass flats near Fort De Soto. Each area offers its own unique fishing opportunities, and we'll make sure to put you on the fish wherever they're biting best that day.
Snook: These hard-fighting linesiders are the rockstars of Tampa Bay inshore fishing. Known for their explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps, snook will test your skills and your tackle. They love to hang around structure like mangrove roots and bridge pilings. The biggest ones, which we call "gator" snook, can top 40 inches and put up a fight you'll never forget. Spring and fall are prime times for snook, but they can be caught year-round in Tampa Bay.
Redfish: Also known as red drum, these copper-colored beauties are a sight to behold when tailing on the flats. Redfish are known for their powerful runs and their distinctive spot near the tail. In Tampa Bay, we catch reds ranging from "rat reds" in the 18-inch range up to bull reds over 30 inches. They're suckers for a well-presented live shrimp or a gold spoon worked across a flat. Fall is particularly good for redfish, but they're available all year.
Spotted Sea Trout: Don't let their name fool you – these speckled predators are more closely related to redfish than trout. They're known for their delicate mouth and their tendency to shake hooks, making them a fun challenge on light tackle. In Tampa Bay, we catch plenty of "keeper" trout in the 15-20 inch range, with some gator trout pushing 25 inches or more. They're suckers for a live shrimp under a popping cork or a soft plastic jig bounced along the bottom. Winter and early spring are peak seasons for big trout.
There's something special about Tampa Bay that keeps fishermen coming back year after year. Maybe it's the thrill of sight-casting to a tailing redfish in gin-clear water. Or perhaps it's the heart-stopping moment when a big snook explodes on your topwater plug. For some, it's the simple pleasure of drifting along, rod in hand, taking in the natural beauty of the bay.

Redfish are a Tampa Bay favorite. These copper-colored bruisers have that iconic black spot near the tail. Most reds we catch are "slot-sized" between 18-27 inches, perfect for the table. But they can grow over 40 inches and 40 pounds. You'll find them tailing in shallow water, often less than 2 feet deep. Look for them around oyster bars, mangroves, and grass flats. Fall is prime time when big schools push into the bay. Reds are known for their powerful, bulldogging fights. They're not the fastest, but they just don't quit. Their firm, white meat is excellent eating too. For best results, try sight-fishing with a gold spoon or weedless soft plastic. Cast well ahead of the fish and work it slowly across their path. When a red follows, be patient - wait for that gill flare before setting the hook.
Sea trout, or specks as we call 'em, are a blast to catch in Tampa Bay. These silvery fish with dark spots usually run 14-20 inches and 1-3 pounds. You'll find them over grass flats and sandy bottom areas in 2-6 feet of water. Spring and fall are prime, but we catch 'em year-round. Trout are known for their light, flaky meat - perfect for a fish fry. They're not the hardest fighters, but they make up for it in numbers. On a good day, you can catch dozens. Drift fishing with live shrimp under a popping cork is deadly effective. For artificial, try a soft plastic jig bounced slowly along the bottom. The key is a slow retrieve - let that lure dance in the current. Trout have soft mouths, so go easy on the hookset.
Snook are a real prize in Tampa Bay. These ambush predators love to hang around mangroves, docks, and other structure in 1-4 feet of water. Most run 20-30 inches, but they can top 40 inches and 30 pounds. Spring and fall are prime seasons when water temps are just right. Snook put up an amazing fight - they'll make blistering runs and leap clear out of the water. Their firm white meat is delicious too, though we encourage catch and release to protect the population. For the best shot at a big one, try live bait like pinfish or whitebait around dawn or dusk. Work it slowly near cover and be ready for explosive strikes. Snook can be choosy, so having a few lure options helps. Nothing beats the thrill of a big snook crushing a topwater plug!
